Algebra Readiness Study by WestEd Recruiting 6th Grade Teachers

April 6, 2010

This via an email sent to Superintendent Galindo from Katie Diaz, Research Assistant, WestEd Mathematics, Science, and Technology Program:

WestEd, a non-profit research, development, and service agency, is working on a study to test the effectiveness of AnimalWatch, an   online, adaptive tutoring system that ties 6th grade math subjects with fun, authentic environmental science material, and we are looking for math teachers to participate!

We are currently recruiting *100, 6th grade math teachers* for the   study, which will begin in fall 2010 and run through the 2012 school year.  Participating teachers will receive stipends from *$600 to
$1500!* and their students will have free access to the AnimalWatch intelligent tutoring system. Participating in this study is a
wonderful opportunity to utilize a fun and useful online tutoring
system in your district’s 6th grade math classes. We are hopeful that
you will encourage your teachers to participate!

The AnimalWatch system is aligned with the 6th grade California Mathematics Content Standards.  The system includes word problems,   basic skills practice, assessments, and instructional resources for
teachers. It has been especially effective with English language
learners and students with low mathematics skills.  Prior studies have
shown that with as little as three hours of classroom use per month,
student performance in mathematics can significantly improve. Teachers
have the flexibility to use AnimalWatch for reinforcing skills,
strengthening concepts, and reviewing for assessments.

We have attached a teacher consent form that outlines the details of participation.  Please forward this message and the attached consent form to any teachers or mathematics coordinators you think might be interested.

Teachers who would like to sign up should complete and sign the attached teacher consent form and fax it back to 650-381-6401. Our   deadline for teacher enrollment is Friday, April 23rd. Hurry. Space is limited!

Please contact our recruitment coordinator, Kathleen Lepori, at   650-381-6424 / klepori@wested.org, if you have any questions.
Information about the study and the teacher consent form is also
posted on our website at www.wested.org/animalwatch.

Below is the consent form that contains more information about the study.
